SIR, I read with some sympathy the recent letter regarding noise nuisance caused by garden machinery, when used selfishly at inappropriate times. I would like to add a further plea to Monmouth residents regarding inconsiderate lighting of garden bonfires. Most people, if needing to light a bonfire in their garden, do it at a time unlikely to annoy neighbours. Unfortunately, we do have the occasional exceptions, when bonfires are selfishly lit without a thought about wind direction, neighbours' washing hanging out to dry or children playing in neighbouring gardens. I was prompted to write this letter when at 10am on a brilliant sunny morning last week I saw bonfire smoke billowing from a nearby garden, drifting through neighbours' washing and over school children in the neighbouring playing fields. Surely those who need to burn garden rubbish can have some thought for others. Name and address supplied
