The Much Marcle Summer Shindig, Dog Show and Fete—organised by eight dedicated villagers—took place last Sunday, drawing a fantastic turnout for a lively afternoon of fun and festivities.

Dog lovers came out in force to take part in the popular dog show, which featured six well-supported classes: Best Six Legs, The Dog the Judge Would Most Like to Take Home, Best Veteran, Cutest Puppy, Best Junior Handler, and Dog That Looks Most Like Its Owner; all judged by Carol Coode, a recently retired Crufts judge.

The event was packed with entertainment for all ages, including a variety of stalls and games such as face painting, tombola, archery, hook-a-duck, skittles, redneck golf, virtual clay pigeon shooting, a human fruit machine, a plant stall, and more.

A highlight of the afternoon was the Tug of War, which drew enthusiastic participation from both children and adults, cheered on by lively crowds. Lyne Down Organics provided a bar serving local ciders and beers, while live music had attendees dancing and enjoying the atmosphere.

Delicious homemade cakes and tea were served in the Memorial Hall—particularly appreciated when a shower arrived just as the dog show concluded. Fortunately, the weather did little to dampen the spirits of those enjoying this warm, family-friendly community event, made possible by the hard work and talents of local groups and volunteers.

After the closure of Much Marcle Stores in 2019, when the previous owners retired, a group of villagers began fundraising for a new shop, post office, and café. They have now secured a site and obtained planning permission.

The project has received strong community backing, with 270 becoming shareholders. Over £110,000 has been raised, although more funding is needed to reach the goal. While the new shop’s opening is still some time away, the team is hopeful it will be ready to welcome everyone to this much needed community social hub in 2027.
