A DOCTOR has been cleared of causing the death of a motorcyclist by dangerous driving.

Dr Vincent Hamlyn, of Sedbury Lane, Tutshill was driving his BMW Z4 when he collided with Kevin Morgan from Cwmbran who was driving a Kawasaki Ninja 300.

The court heard how Dr Hamlyn exited from the Coldra roundabout on the 21st June 2014 and was heading up the A449 to Monmouth when the collision occurred.

Dr Hamlyn was focusing on the road ahead and checking for traffic coming from the M4 slip road when he felt a gentle bump, looked behind and saw Mr Morgan's bike sliding across the road.

Dr Hamlyn told the court he thought Mr Morgan had travelled around the roundabout and didn't expect anyone to overtake him on the right as there wasn't enough room to do so.

The court heard how Dr Hamlyn was "devastated" after discovering Mr Morgan had died and tried to resuscitate him for 20 minutes before the ambulance arrived.

Mr Morgan died on the scene after receiving "catastrophic head injuries".

Prosecutor Matthew Roberts claimed Dr Hamlyn had been racing Mr Morgan prior to the collision and had been "jostling for pole position" while the pair tried to outpace each other.

Dr Hamlyn said he was "absolutely not" racing Mr Morgan but admitted to exceeding the speed limit as he approached the national speed limit sign.
