SIR,
As a reward I was given the chance to put on a pair of pads and join in the batting. I have never forgotten the thrill I had when putting the pads on for the first time.
One of the players involved was Len Cook and I had the pleasure of playing with him in the Monmouth side after the war.
He and I were amongst the runs in a match at Ross when the Pavilion roof suffered a few broken tiles.
I was also present at a Cricket Club Committee Meeting when Len, as secretary, presented the minutes of the previous meeting.
He had used his skill in shorthand to record everything that had been spoken whether it was relovent to the subject being discussed or not.
The result had all present laughing their heads off.
Len Cook was fatally injured in an accident when riding his bicyle along the Monmouth Bypass to go home for lunch from work. He was greatly missed.

SIR,
Your story about Monmouth Cricket Club missing out on Government funding to provide permanent outdoor nets reminds me of when, as a 10 year old in the mid 1930s. I spent evenings on Monmouth Sports Ground acting as an out fielder for those practicing their batting.
As a reward I was given the chance to put on a pair of pads and join in the batting. I have never forgotten the thrill I had when putting the pads on for the first time.
