Cricket in Herefordshire in the 20th Century is a new book by Ken Hook and Frank Bennett. It was launched in Ross at the Conservative Club on Wednesday night and a number of local cricketers were there to meet the authors and to reminisce about the good old days. There is a rich history of cricket in this area and the book includes information on not only the many Ross clubs but also the clubs in the surrounding areas including Bridstow, Brockhampton, Brampton Abbotts, Goodrich, Longhope, Sellack, The Lea and Weston under Penyard. The book is a celebration of cricket throughout the county and is packed with anecdotes, stories and pictures of a golden age for cricket and cricketers. The wealth of information in it has been painstakingly researched and collected together by the authors in what must have been a true labour of love. With forwards by former England player, Tom Graveney and one of Hereford's best known players, John Chadd and contributions by many Herefordshire players it is a worthy addition to any book collection about a sport with a very rich literary heritage. Having grown up in a family of cricketers, married a cricketer and made many lifelong friends through cricket, I know how much discussion and debate the sport generates and this book will be a valuable reference book for such occasions. In fact it is a must for anyone who has ever had anything to do with cricket in Herefordshire and is ready for a fantastic trip down memory lane. The book is priced £14.95 with free post and packing and is available, signed, from the authors. Ken Hook, Portway House, Grafton Lane, Hereford HR2 8BS or Frank Bennett 73, Seaton Avenue Hereford HR1 1NP. Cheques can be made out to either author.
