A MONMOUTH man has avoided jail after pleading guilty to a series of theft offences.
Roger Nugent, 49, of Bolingbroke Close, pleaded guilty at Newport Magistrates’ Court to numerous thefts, dating from March.
The earliest occurred on March 12 where Nugent stole two boxes of legs of lamb and sixteen multipack boxes of Cadbury Creme Eggs from Monmouth’s Iceland, totalling a value of £70.
In May, Nugent stole diesel fuel to the value of £200 belonging to Mandarin Stone Ltd. Later that month, Nugent stole an unknown value of alcohol from Tesco in Chepstow.
Nugent stole more alcohol in July, this time belonging to Marks and Spencer in Monmouth. The court was told Nugent stole six bottles of vodka valued at £160.
The most recent offence occurred on September 11, where Nugent stole steak products from Monmouth’s Co-Operative Store valued at £66.
For the March offence, Nugent was given four weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to pay £70 compensation.
For the diesel theft, he received a four weeks prison sentence consecutive to the March offence, suspended for 12 months. Nugent was also ordered to pay £200 compensation.
The theft from Chepstow’s Tesco saw no order of compensation as there were insufficient details provided by the prosecution to make an order. However, Nugent received four weeks in prison to run concurrently, suspended for 12 months.
The Marks and Spencer theft resulted in Nugent receiving a compensation order for £160, and four weeks in prison, consecutive to the diesel theft sentence, suspended for 12 months.
Nugent’s most recent offence saw a prison sentence of four weeks, consecutive to the Marks and Spencer theft sentence, also suspended for 12 months. He was further ordered to pay £66 compensation.
