SIR,

Regarding recent exchanges over Monmouthshire County Council's (MCC) delay in implementing the pinch-point trial at the top of Monnow Street, residents will know that many drivers seem to think that they have the right to proceed even when there is no space to do so safely.

Vehicles overhang the narrow pavements and pedestrians have no space to step aside.

I have been in collision with a wing mirror there myself, so I know this happens.

The area cannot be avoided by shoppers on the way through the town and is a nightmare for those less mobile than myself, or with less than perfect vision.

This public debate in the Beacon means that county council officials cannot pretend that they do not know this is a pedestrian safety issue.

I advise any motorist who resents having to share the world with pedestrians that the shared space concept is the only way for the county council to accept their legal responsibilities without making much of our main street a dedicated pedestrian area.

I attended a public meeting where the Hamilton-Baillie shared space concept was introduced and was convinced that it makes sense for the town's pedestrians, motorists and traders.

I urge MCC to behave responsibly and implement the entire scheme as soon as possible.
