LOCAL Councillors Richard John and Jayne McKenna recently joined passengers and a representative from Newport Bus on a journey on the 65-bus route to discuss potential improvements to the service.

The visit brought together Rosemary, Diane and Jane, leading members of the Friends of the 65 Bus, alongside Alex Clarke from Newport Bus, to review the route and identify opportunities to improve access and the overall passenger experience.

Travelling from Monmouth Bus Station through Lydart, Penallt, The Narth and Trellech to Llanishen and back, the group inspected bus stops and shelters along the route and discussed a number of issues raised by local residents and regular bus users.

The group also discussed a recently produced leaflet designed to encourage visitors to use the 65 and 69 bus services to access local attractions, pubs and other destinations across the area.

Regular user of the 65 bus, Rosemary Corcoran, said: “This trip was a great opportunity for us to strengthen the positive working relationship we have with Newport Bus, Monmouthshire County Council and our local councillors.

“The 65 bus is one of the most picturesque routes in South Wales and it was delight to discuss how we can make it even better.”

Cllr Richard John said: “The 65 bus is an important service for residents and visitors alike, connecting communities across rural Monmouthshire and providing access to employment, local services as well as tourist attractions. It was extremely valuable to hear directly from passengers and Newport Bus about how the route can be improved.”

Cllr Jayne McKenna said: “The Friends of the 65 Bus do a fantastic job championing this service and ensuring the voices of passengers are heard. Our visit highlighted several practical improvements that could make the route more accessible and convenient, including additional stops and better signage.”
