A COUNCILLOR has expressed his concern about the condition of roads in Chepstow, describing the issue as “hugely frustrating”.
“Residents get frustrated when the roads aren’t to an acceptable standard, and it’s not good enough for council tax payers,” said Labour County Councillor Dimitri Batrouni.
“It’s the service that residents experience the most without necessarily realising, with using the roads to and from work.”
“It makes it even more frustrating with the budgets being cut for road maintenance both last year and this year.”
This year Monmouthshire County Council proposed a £200,000 saving on highways, specifically road maintenance. MCC proposed to reduce staff numbers by three, reducing one vehicle and making fewer materials available for the maintenance of county roads.
They also proposed to supplement county workers with staff from the South Wales Trunk Road Agency, grounds maintenance and waste teams.
Earlier this year, it was found that MCC paid out almost £2,000 last year due to potholes and surface damage to roads.
The council paid out a total of £1,931 of compensation last financial year, with the most expensive being a £664 payout for property damage.
