Councillor Evans was elected at the annual meeting of Monmouth Town Council on May 20, 2024, and councillor Jackie Atkin was elected as deputy Mayor.
Cllr Evans has spoken about his journey as Mayor maintaining Monmouth’s sustainability and community.
“It's been a great privilege, a great honour, and it's really been a source of great personal satisfaction,” said Mr Evans.
“To get the role in the first place was fantastic, but then as the time's gone on, the more people you meet, the more events you go to. It's just a great thing.”
“The Monmouthshire Beacon's been really good at the coverage of the things I do.”
Looking after the community has come with its benefits, however Mr Evans has stated how there can be challenges faced along the way.
“I think some of the issues that surprised me was the lack of knowledge, perhaps, of what the mayoral role is.”
As Mayor, they wear a “Mayoral chain” to highlight their civic role, the chain has been passed on restoring history from ancestors.
“It is real gold, and it dates back to 1833.” Said Cllr Evans.
“It was presented to the town council in 1833 by Rosa Champney Powell.”
“Her husband, Mr Champney Powell, at the time was the town mayor.”
Cllr Evans describes first being elected as Mayor as: “It was a complete mix of elation, but there's also gosh.”
“I did have a sense of satisfaction that actually I could be of service.”
As well as being Mayor personally, Cllr Evans has family who have had roles serving in communities.
“My maternal grandmother was a borough councillor. My father was a city councillor in Birmingham, and I joined the air force at 17.”
The mayor has been involved in many town engagements in the past year, some being the revamp of the Wyesham underpass, Saint Thomas Garden, unveiling the people’s piano and recently the Town Council have sponsored football kit for the Monmouth Comprehensive School.
“No two days are the same. That's what's so great about the role, you don't know what's coming next,” said Cllr Evans.
“I've been to as many businesses as I'm aware of as they open thank them on behalf of the town because they they're adding to the town and the prosperity.”
With a full year, Cllr Evans explains how he’s only had three days off in the year as he’s been offering his time in the community, visiting a care home on Christmas day and has made several public appearances like dining with The Duke of Edinburgh.
Cllr Evans is still going to be a town councillor for the Wyesham ward after his duty of being Mayor comes to an end.
Cllr Evans describes his experience as: “Unforgettable, and something that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. It's been a phenomenal experience.”
