A DEMONSTRATION against an expected 13% rise in Monmouthshire County Council's Council Tax was held at County Hall, Cwmbran, on Tuesday morning.

The protest was organised by former County Councillor John Huntley who addressed a meeting in Monmouth last week when it was decided to stage the demonstration.

"People are not prepared to accept such a big rise," said Mr Huntley.

"People want to know where the money is being spent. The County Council have had an increase from the National Assembly, but the Council spending programme shows a 13% increase. On top of that is the Town Council precept and the Police Authority.

"The Council should be making savings, not cuts," he said.

Another protest is being organised for March 6th at County Hall when the Council meet to make a formal decision on the Council Tax.
