THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE of Monmouthshire County Council, Colin Berg, has been named in a list of council workers earning more than £100,000 a year.

According to the Town Hall Rich List, which is produced by the Taxpayers' Alliance, Berg's total remuneration for the 2008/2009 tax year was £107,579, an increase of two per cent on the previous 12 months.

The figure included an 'essential car user' allowance of £1,095, paid to employees using their own car for work, and a 'per mile' allowance of £728.08.

Since 2007, the Taxpayers' Alliance has provided an annual list of council staff whose total remuneration exceeds £100,000.

The fourth Town Hall Rich List was compiled using responses from Freedom of Information requests submitted by the Taxpayers' Alliance in December 2009 to all councils in the UK.

The request asked for the remuneration details of members of staff whose total remuneration exceeded £100,000 in the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 financial years.

The report found a 14 per cent increase in the number of council staff earning more than £100,000.

The average pay rise of council staff on the Town Hall Rich List was five per cent. Over the same period, the average pay rise for a nurse was 2.7 per cent, and for a teacher, 2.3 per cent.
