At present homes on the Rockfield side of town are cut off when there is flooding in the Watery Lane area. Town Councillor Gary Witcombe has been gathering names for a petition calling on the County Council to open up a route through Ash Lane to alleviate the problem.
However, residents of Ash Lane are opposing the move which they say will turn their quiet road into a dangerous through road.
At Monday night's meeting of the Town Council Cllr Tim Buckland said that the suggestion had been made at the Council's planning meeting that the Link Road be extended possibly near the Paul Jarrold depot to provide a through road. This would take the traffic away from Ash Lane, while providing a permanent route.
He said there was general agreement at the planning meeting and they would press the County Council to consider the option.
