MONMOUTH's cattle market will be moved to make way for the proposed new bridge over the River Monnow.

The design for the bridge, by leading architects Ove Arup, now only needs final approval by the Environment Agency.

A spokesman for the architects told a public meeting that the bridge they had designed was as narrow as possible in order not to interfere with views of the old medieval gated bridge.

It would sweep from the Cinderhill car park to the cattle market and would have no lighting standards to interrupt views.

The bridge would form part of a major rethink of traffic flows through and around Monmouth in order to make the centre more pedestrian-friendly.

In all five designs had been considered before the present proposal was adopted.
