MEMBERS of the community gathered at Monmouth Castle on November 11 for an Armistice Day service, remembering those who gave their lives in World War 1 and subsequent conflicts.
The service began with an introduction from Reverend Julie Barrell, Mayor’s Chaplain and was attended by local dignitaries, members of the Royal British Legion, the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers Militia as well as members of the public.
Mayor of Monmouth, Councillor Jackie Atkin, said: “I would like to take a moment to remember the people who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the people of Monmouthshire today.”
The service included the laying of wreaths and the community brought the service to a close singing a verse of the British National anthem, God Save the King and The Welsh National Anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
Armistice Day is to remember the soldiers and civilians who died during the First World War in 1918 and conflicts since. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, silence was held for two minutes to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for our country.
Poppies inspired by the famous poem In Flanders Fields were worn as a symbol of Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.
