The thundering large, lorries and an excessive volume of traffic using the A4136 has caused consternation from residents in Staunton and Wyesham who are worried about the increasing accidents and the condition of the road. The two councillors, Marrilyn Smart, representing Staunton, and Liz Hacket Pain, from Wyesham, decided it would be a good idea to work together to try and get something done to ease the problem. Counc Marrilyn Smart said "I am constantly getting complaints from residents in Staunton about the increase of heavy lorries travelling through the village and I very much welcome this initiative from my colleague on Monmouthshire County Council as we are both very concerned about the safety and the deteriorating of the A4136". While County Councillor Hacket Pain recalled a recent journey to Coleford following a large lorry. She said "Everytime the lorry went around a corner and a lorry was coming in the opposite direction their wing mirrors clashed together. It was most frightening". So far the two councillors have contacted the two Highways Departments in their respective authorities, Gloucester County Council and Monmouthshire County Council. The idea is a joint meeting to consider placing a weight restriction on the road. Also to investigate any other means of making the road, which is the main link between the two counties and countries, safer than at present.
