Amy, a mountain ponrescued from Cefn Golau mountain in Blaenau Gwent, has given birth at the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies (SWHP).

After her rescue on 3rd May an immediate watch was put on the heavily pregnant pony as it was not clear how close she was to giving birth.

The Society's Chairman, Jenny MacGregor MBE, was routinely checking the expectant mother and noticed she was lying down and very still. She could then see that the foal was half out but the pony was so exhausted that she had given up and could not deliver the little foal by herself. So Jenny stepped in and delivered the foal, a first in her 40 years of working with rescue animals.

The colt was named Todd, Jenny's maiden name, and is now doing well, although her mum is still in a poor state and will need some attention to bring her back to good health.

"I happened to be on my own at the time as the two staff had just popped in to Monmouth to see to a horse and get some food shopping but I'm also pretty chuffed that at 81 I have acquired a new skill!

"As you may well imagine there was much celebration over a cup of tea with a little something added that evening. All of us here at Coxstone are absolutely thrilled. Tod was my 3maiden name so it seemed very suitable," said Jenny.

You can come and have a look at mum and son at the Society's 'Pop in Sunday' at Coxstone Farm, between 11.30am and 2.30pm this Sunday. Light refreshments are available.
