Police have warned residents to be extra vigilant after a spate of burglaries in and around Monmouth.

Officers were called to six burglaries in less than a week including break-ins in Dingestow, Cross Ash, Usk and Monmouth town centre.

Offenders entered the properties by removing the panel of UPVC doors, as well as residents leaving their properties insecure.

Items including cash, laptops and other electrical items were stolen.

Detective Inspector Lyn Hawker said: 'We continue to focus our attention and resources on this type of crime, and despite continuing to reduce crime in Monmouthshire, we're asking for residents to play their part too.

"Far too many burglaries are taking place where residents have left windows open or doors unlocked, which is like an open invitation for burglars.

"Protect your home and valuables and always check your locks."

Officers are offering the following advice;

• Always keep your doors and windows locked (even when you are at home during the day)

• Take your key out of the back of the lock and keep it somewhere safe (out of reach from windows and doors)

• Register any high value gifts you are buying, free of charge on the national property database http://www.immobilise.com">www.immobilise.com

• If you are going away for the holidays, remember to cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries

• Mark or etch your property with your postcode, house or flat number or the first three letters of your house name

• Install a visible burglar alarm.

• Never leave a spare key concealed anywhere near the front door – burglars know all of the hiding places.
