A CHEPSTOW singer has been selected to feature in the Horizons 12 project for the BBC.

Violet Skies (Hannah Berney) will be offered an opportunity of a lifetime to perform across the country and receive a boost in the music industry.

Now in its second year, the project aims to develop new, independent contemporary music in Wales and support and promote emerging Welsh music talent to wider audiences.

Out of 300 artists who applied for a place only 12 were chosen.

The artists will be offered a platform at events across Wales and on BBC Wales's national services - BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio Wales - starting with Focus Wales this Sunday (26th April) and followed by Machynlleth Comedy Festival on Friday 1st May.

Violet's musical style boasts a mix of classic arrangements, blues and electronica.

"I grew up listening to Paul Simon, Sting and a lot of great song writers" she said.

"The project is an amazing opportunity and is great for Welsh artists. It's also a good chance to see different parts of Wales.

"I'm most looking forward to performing at the Great Escape Festival. I watched the artists perform last year and thought how wonderful it would be to perform on stage myself."

BBC Radio Wales, Jason Mohammad, said: "It's been great getting to know the bands from this year's Horizons project, playing their music on the radio, and meeting lots of them at events.

"The benefits are a two way street; exposure for the artists and fresh new sounds for our shows.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting the 12 new artists, and I'm sure I'll fall for the diverse musical styles on offer from Horizons as we go through the year."

Lisa Matthews, portfolio manager at the Arts Council of Wales, said: "We're excited to be supporting another talented cohort of musicians through Horizons in 2015. For the acts it's a year of opportunities and development and for everyone else interested in new music it's also a wonderful snapshot of music emerging from Wales at this moment.

"We're looking forward to tracking their progress at events, festivals and on TV, radio and online over the next 12 months."

The Horizons acts of 2015 will benefit from specially programmed BBC Radio events, sessions and playlists; direct contact with a BBC producer; national and international musical opportunities, to name just a few.
