THE family of local artist and avid tennis player, Tom Dewhurst, unveiled a bench in his honour on bank holiday Sunday 27th August.

The bench was organised by Tom’s tennis friends at Monmouth Tennis Club and will be a fitting reminder of his contribution to the club on the courts at Chippenham Sports Ground.

His wife Anthea with their son Laurie (pictured) unveiled the bench; joined by 17 members of Tom’s extended family and many club members. The bench was bought with donations in celebration of his life.

So far the club have raised around £150 for Kidney Wales; Tom’s chosen charity. Tom and Anthea moved to Monmouth in 1991. Sadly Tom was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2013 but, despite years of treatment Tom continued to play tennis.

Anthea said: “The tennis club was so important to Tom; the social aspect as much as playing. He was an artist in the attic, who enjoyed the solitude when painting, but with tennis it was different and the many friends he made provided friendship and support”. The club would like to thank all those who donated and welcome anyone interested in playing at the memorial tournament on 14th October.

Monmouth Tennis Club is always looking for new players and a reduced rate winter subscription is available for new members from 1st October. For further information on the memorial tournament membership or coaching contact Carol Pell [email protected]
