Llanbadoc and Usk Ward Councillor Tony Kear met Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch at a round table discussion to highlight the growing challenges facing small businesses and the hospitality sector in Usk.

The discussion brought together business representatives for an opportunity to share the realities facing independent businesses.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Kear said that hospitality, retail and independent businesses are the heart of Usk’s economy, employing local people and attracting visitors from across Wales and beyond. However, he warned that the combination of rising employer costs, increasing National Minimum Wage obligations, PAYE costs, soaring utility bills and the current 20per cent VAT rate is placing unprecedented pressure on businesses.

Cllr Kear called for the Government to reduce VAT for the hospitality sector to 10 per cent, bringing the UK into line with many European countries. He said such a move would provide businesses with the confidence to invest, create jobs and stimulate growth.

Hospitality business person Claire Cooke, who recently took over the famous Three Salmons Hotel, said: “The hospitality and small business sector is vital to towns like Usk. These businesses create jobs, attract visitors and give our high streets their unique identity. However, the current financial pressures are making it harder than ever to invest, innovate and expand. Growth is being stifled at a time when we should be encouraging enterprise.”

Following the meeting, Cllr Kear as Chair of the Business Group - UBSE, said he would continue to press for practical measures that reduce the burden on small businesses, protect local jobs and help hospitality businesses flourish.

“Usk has a thriving independent business community that gives our town its unique character,” said Cllr Kear. “If we want our high streets to prosper, we must create the conditions that allow businesses to grow, invest and employ more people. Supporting hospitality is key to securing the long-term future of our local economy.”
