To organise a November away day for his senior golfing colleagues, new captain Mike Topper took a gamble that the late Autumn weather would be kind.

His gamble on the weather paid off and while the fairways of the chosen course at Glascoed's Woodlake Park were not bathed in sunshine, the rain stayed away and the morning mist lifted to treat the golfers to the surrounding panoramic splendour.

The views of Llandegfedd Reservoir and the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons beyond were a constant presence for the 36 visiting seniors to enjoy.

The dual format for the nine four-ball groups combined an individual stableford competition with pairs in each group also competing in match-play.

Simon Sherrad topped the stableford scoring with 33 points closely followed by Brian Powell with 32 points.

The pairs who won their matches by the highest margins were David Wedel and Robin Pugh who finished seven up followed by Bill Parnell and Bob Davies who were four holes ahead after 18.

Bob Davies also won the nearest the hole competition on the par-three 17th and Trevor Knight was closest on the par-three 16th.

Following a hearty meal, captain Mike Topper presented the top performers with prizes after which the party dispersed to reflect on an enjoyable day of challenging golf.

Given its 2011 success a November 'away day' for Monmouth seniors could well become a diary fixture for future years.
