I am writing on behalf of the Monmouth & District Group of Amnesty International.

Our local Amnesty Group recently held a street collection in Monmouth town centre. We collected a total of £201.67, and so we want to say a big 'thank you' to local people for their generous support.

Amnesty International is a campaigning organisation that acts all over the world. Its purpose being to protect people wherever justice, fairness, freedom and truth are denied.

Amnesty's campaigns are wide-ranging. To take just a few examples: Amnesty currently has a particular focus on human rights for women, by seeking to champion the rights of women and girls and hold governments accountable for ending discrimination and inequality.

Another special area of current campaigning is to do with poverty: Amnesty is working to highlight the way that poverty and human rights violations often go hand in hand, and to empower and support those that have their rights violated. And, of course, there is the desperate situation caused by the ongoing conflict in Syria.

The Monmouth & District Group is one of about 280 Amnesty groups in the UK. Our local group participates in selected Amnesty campaigns, and all donations made to our group are sent to Amnesty International UK, to contribute to Amnesty's work in standing up for human rights and acting against abuses.

Again, thank you to all who donated towards this important work.
