A lifeline of friendship

SIR,

Contact the Elderly, is an organisation that provides a lifeline of friendship.

With over 4,500 volunteers, we relieve the loneliness often felt by people who live alone with little or no social support, giving a little time, a lot of fun and hopefully, making a lasting difference.

October 1st-5th was UK Older Peoples' Week' and Contact the Elderly together with SuperJam, the jam company owned by Scottish teenage entrepreneur, Fraser Doherty, decided to celebrate the occasion by hosting 100 tea parties all over the UK.

Everyone at the events was provided with wool and needles and those who didn't know were taught how to knit, by some expert knitters from John Lewis and the local CSV-RSVP knitting groups.

Everyone knitted a square, all of which will be sewn together to produce hundreds of blankets for an orphanage in Central India.

We are proud to be part of a series of events that thousands of people up and down the country were able to enjoy. There was lots of laughter and many new friendships were made.

Contact the Elderly has a group in Llandogo, meeting monthly for Sunday tea.

Supermarket giant Waitrose has announced it will give money to 7,000 local projects in the next 12 months through the Community Matters Scheme, and you could help Contact the Elderly to benefit.

If you shop at Waitrose, please consider nominating us to become one of their monthly charities. Not only will it give us much needed funds, but it could also encourage many more volunteers and members to join in.

Contact the Elderly now has a group in Llandogo, meeting monthly for Sunday tea. If you would like to join them or find out more, phone Vanessa Powell on 029 20193767 or freephone 0800 716543. See our events page in the paper for more details.
