TWO people who tackled former soldier Kyle Jones when he “went berserk” outside a Sedbury pub are to receive Sheriff’s rewards of £250 each for their public spiritedness.

When Jones, 35, was sentenced to a suspended jail term at Gloucester Crown Court on Friday, (2nd December) Judge Jamie Tabor QC praised the courage of Sarah Hutchins and Shaun Hogg and made the awards to them.

They will be presented with their rewards by the Gloucestershire High Sheriff Lady Bathurst at a ceremony at a later date.

The judge also ordered Jones to pay Mr Hogg and Ms Hutchins a further £100 compensation each, as well as £100 compensation for police sergeant Michael Wallen and £75 each for police constables David Tamplin and Ashley Turner.

Jones, of Fisherman’s Walk, Chepstow, was sentenced to 16 months jail suspended for two years with a mental health requirement to get psychiatric treatment as well as a 25 day rehabilitation activity programme.

At an earlier hearing the prosecution said Jones had caused a “hideous scene of violence” outside the Village Inn, Sedbury, on 13th December last year.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms Hutchins and Sgt Wallen causing them both actual bodily harm; assaulting Katrina Jones and Mr Hogg by beating, and assaulting constables Tamplin and Turner in the execution of their duty.

Prosecutor George Threlfall said: "People heard a woman screaming in distress outside the pub.

“They saw the defendant throwing Katrina Jones between two parked cars.

"They decided to call the police and Mr Hogg ran towards the defendant to stop him. Mr Jones punched him to the side of the head and then grabbed him and threw him to the ground.

"The defendant went back towards Miss Jones, who was still on the ground.

“He kicked her to the face a number of times. Witnesses describe the attack as relentless and they thought he was going to kill her.

"Miss Hutchins then ran up to Mr Jones shouting ’leave her alone.’ Mr Jones punched her and threw her across the road.

"Police officers arrived and saw Katrina Jones lying in the road screaming and writhing around. She had swelling to the right eye and and blood on her face.

"The police went to her aid and took her home to Chepstow. The defendant managed to leave the scene.

"Miss Jones refused to tell the police what had happened or why and she would not let them into her house.

"Then they realised the defendant was already in her home. He flung open the door and ran out screaming to them not to touch Ms Jones and to get off her.

"He was very aggressive, his eyes bulging. He smelt of alcohol.

"Sgt Wallen took hold of his left hand and another officer took hold of his right.

“PC Tamplin attempted to put handcuffs on him but he suddenly grabbed hold of the cuffs and hit the officer with them on the left side of his head.

"He continued to resist and fought with the officers, kicking PC Turner in the stomach. He broke free and drove Sgt Wallen into a wall, causing him to hit his left hand and eye."

Another PC tasered Jones but he continued struggling and was sprayed with PAVA gas before finally being overpowered and arrested.

Jon Holmes, defending, conceded Jones had caused ’horrific scenes’ but asked the court to bear in mind the contents of psychological reports on his personality disorder and the trauma he had suffered during military service in Afghanistan.
