“Feel the fear and do it anyway” says 80-year-old Wendy Harris from Monmouthshire who will be abseiling down the face of St Mary’s Church in aid of the Severn Area Rescue Association.

SARA are a volunteer-based charity who provide search and rescue operations in and around the area to help rescue people in the community. Each year SARA is called out over 100 times.

Wendy last participated in abseiling some years ago at the multi- story carpark in Newport and always wanted to take part in this sporting activity again.

“It was exhilarating,” said Wendy.

“I was bouncing, because I had done something I am proud of.”

The charity has been saving lives in and around the Severn for fifty years, Wendy turned 80 in April and being a part of the group, the U3A she saw the opportunity to abseil and wanted to be a part of along with many other thrilling activities she had planned to as a treat for her birthday, some of the activities are going in a hot air balloon and gliding and horse riding.

“Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

At 80 years old, Wendy shows that age is no obstacle to helping others and doing what you

“There’s no limit, if you can do it physically but you're frightened of doing it, just do it anyway.”

“Once you’ve done something you’re frightened of, it’s brilliant.”

Wendy is originally from Cwmbran but moved to Monmouth in which she still lives today.

Wendy is looking forward to abseiling and raising money for such a helpful charity like SARA.

You can show your appreciation and donate to the GoFund me page which is set up. All the donations which are raised will be going towards the SARA charity.
