HAVING moved from central London to Monmouth in 2016, whilst between premises and looking for an appropriate building to buy in Monmouth to re-establish a gallery, IAP Fine Art is curating a ‘pop-up’ exhibition in the grade-one listed Shire Hall, Monmouth this weekend.

Recent paintings, drawings and prints by Chris Gollon and Maggi Hambling will be shown, alongside signed prints by David Hockney, Terry Frost, Victor Pasmore, Ben Nicholson, Paula Rego, Graham Sutherland and Howard Hodgkin.

Previously unseen, the exhibition will also feature some of the last paintings Chris Gollon painted before his unexpected death in 2017, including a portrait of Francis Bacon remembered from a chance encounter the artist had with Bacon in the 1980s, in which he saved Bacon’s life.

The exhibition is curated to juxtapose the work of some of the greatest masters in painting and printmaking from the last 50 years, to celebrate their diverse imaginations, and to give a sense of the evolution of these art forms in these major artists’ hands. The exhibition will include ‘Refectory’ by Paula Rego (2002, from ‘Jayne Eyre – Poetry & Story) and ‘The Enchantress with the Baby Rapunzel’ by David Hockney (1969, from a tale by the Brothers Grimm); as well as latest seascapes and portraits by Maggi Hambling. Also displayed is a lithograph by Graham Sutherland inspired by the rock forms along the Pembrokeshire coast.

IAP Fine Art continues its 24-year association with Monmouth-based master jeweller Paul Hatton, who will display for a first time his latest creation, a seven-branch solid silver candelabra, as well as some of his latest jewellery designs. Paul has exhibited in Goldsmith’s Hall and was commissioned by the Royal Institute of British Architects to make the solid silver RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture.

The exhibition is kindly sponsored by Handelsbanken, Thomas Carroll Plc, The Wye Valley Group and Harrison Clark Rickerbys LLP.

The exhibition will open on Saturday 13th from 10am to 4pm and Sunday 14th from 10.30am to 4pm.
