MEMBERS of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) are completing an arduous physical challenge in memory of those who fell during The Great War and raising money for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF).
Staff Sergeant Gareth Heycock of the Royal Army Physical Training Corp is organising the challenge to hon lost comrades and to maintain awareness of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The challenge involves four teams of two members of the Regiment running continually for 100 hours carrying heavy bergens over various distances.
The teams will carry 44lb bergens over 800m in 7min 30 sec and then 2.5 km in 15 minutes.
After running, the soldiers will complete numerous physical activities such as five 35kg power bag lifts in two minutes and a jerry can walk over 150m.
The challenge is taking place around Vauxhall Fields, Monmouth and started at 8am yesterday (Tuesday 6th November) and finishes at 12pm on Saturday.
Gareth said: “The challenge will test both the physical and mental ability of each individual involved. The lack of sleep, rest and recovery will be a challenge in itself. We are hoping to raise as much money as we can for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, who support both serving soldiers, veterans and their families of the British Army. We are putting donation buckets outside of Vauxhall Camp, Monmouth or you can donate online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/pete-mumford. Any donation is greatly appreciated”.
