SPIN bowler Ben Davies might only be 12 years old – but he has already taken a five-wicket haul at a first-class cricket venue. Ben, who lives in Monmouth, was presented with the match ball after taking 5-36 from eight overs in a match for Wales Under-12s at Gloucestershire's redeveloped County Ground in Bristol. Ben helped to dismiss Gloucestershire for 124 but Wales also struggled with the bat and were bowled out for 114 in last Friday's exciting match. Despite the narrow loss, the Monmouth Cricket Club youngster enjoyed his day at the home of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Ben, who is a Monmouth Comprehensive School pupil, also put in a superb bowling display for Wales just two days earlier when he took 4-8 from eight overs in a narrow three-run defeat at Devon. Ben, who bowled four maidens in his excellent spell, was instrumental in dismissing Devon for 64. However, Wales also struggled and were shot out for 61. Ben will be among around 80 young players from Monmouth Cricket Club who will hoping funding for the club's permanent two-bay outdoor net facility at the Sports Ground gets the green-light from the county council today (Wednesday). Monmouthshire County Council are rubber-stamping applications recommended, by the town council, for approval for funding from Monmouth's Section 106 pot. Monmouth Cricket Club's proposed nets are among applications which have been recommended for approval.
