A friday evening trip to Ely Rangers, one of the form sides of the division, was going to be a stern test for Undy FC.

The absent list was still lengthy with three centre halves missing – Ben Roberts (work), skipper Gareth Heywood (ill) and Rhys Aherne (suspended), plus Olly Beckett (holiday) and Kel Stevens (suspended).

Seventeen-year-old youth player Paul Clayton was drafted in to make his full debut and striker Mike Jones made a welcome return after a number of weeks out with a groin injury.

The 2-2 full-time scoreline was a fair result in the end with both sides enjoying good periods of posession and pressure.

Mike Jones opened the scoring on seven minutes at the back post from an excellent Andrew Larcombe cross.

The hosts hit the bar from a header on 22 minutes and Undy had a few decent chances to increase the lead but it was the home side who equalised on 43 minutes from a free kick that was headed in at the back post.

Ely seemed content with using their giant of a striker at every opportunity and constantly launched the ball toward him, keeping Binning and Clayton very busy.

Ely took the lead on 65 minutes when their striker turned Thompson outside then inside and drove a great shot into the far corner beyond the hapless Smallcombe.

Undy were not done though and on 78 minutes Tom Hooper arguably scored the goal of the game as he went past two players and smashed his effort in the top corner from  25 yards out.

Undy threw on Dan Jarman and Ben Smith up front as they looked to get the winner but the game played out and the points were shared.
