Following Monmouth Town senior side successful league winning campaign last season, the town's under 12s football squad that mostly began under the guidance of belated coach Kevin Johnson since the age of six, took heed and finished with The East Gwent Title at the end of their first ever competitive season.

Embarking on the challenge back in early September, the team began by hosting title challengers Caldicot Whites and after being steam rolled in the first half to a four nil deficit at half time, the Monmouth side won this first league fixture six four at the death.

Many great games followed, including a Saturday evening fixture with neighbours Monmouth Albion attracting a strong crowd, the Albion blessed with some great skill and passing ability, took a one nil lead into the break, even though their players are a year younger than most sides. But this was a game of two halves and the Kingfishers overruled the Albion in the second half to run out comfortable winners. Later meetings between these two sides were to see the Albion hold the Town to three each draw, but the Kingfishers had the last say in the final fixture between these two sides.

On the road the Town were held to two draws at Garden City, and suffered a narrow defeat away at Usk, the only loss of the season, having lost this one game, drawn three games and winning all the rest, the Kingfishers with four games remaining could now only be caught by Caldicot Whites.

Town winning a tough fixture away at Undy, were hearing news filtering through the power of text message that neighbours Albion had just comfortably beaten challengers Whites. With this exciting development The Kingfishers hosted Caldicot Whites the following Thursday evening needing only one point from the three remaining games to win the league title.

The yellow team of Monmouth covered theirselves in glory winning this match seven to two, and bagged the title before gaining another three points away against Caldicot Blues, and then completing the campaign with a further three points entertaining a very big Undy side in a very difficult game.

This being the last game of the season, the young Kingfishers, sponsored by Paws Pet Shop and The Elms Veterinary Surgery, were presented with the winning medals and the League Trophy from the East Gwent Officials and the celebrations began.

The Town side with the league season completed, will play Undy in the cup final at Chippenham Fields Monmouth on Saturday 9th May 11am kick off.
