A stunning free-kick deep into extra-time by Geraint Reynolds put hosts Tintern Abbey into the final of the Centenary Cup with a dramatic 7-6 victory.

They and Sudbrook CC squandered handy leads in the 90 minutes on a warm day in front of a bumper crowd.

Sudbrook scored first, a scuffed free-kick going straight to Richard Lund who scored from six yards, and five minutes later Neil Richards headed home a cross for 2-0.

The hosts rallied and Ollie Moss crossed to Reynolds to pull one back before Sudbrook restored their two-goal cushion, a peach of a free-kick over the wall by Paul Tanner making it 3-1.

But by half-time it was all square thanks to a Reynolds hat-trick; a long free-kick from George Gibbard rebounding off the bar for him to tap in for 3-2, then further good work by Moss releasing the overlapping Karl Burton whose low cross allowed another tap in at the front post.

After the break, Tintern went in front for the first time when Sam Hayward crossed for substitute Matt Dickens whose looping header found the far corner for 4-3.

And it got even better when Taka Yamagata got behind the defence and fed Moss to tap home, before four minutes later Moss tapped in his second for 6-3.

The result looked done and dusted, but after Tintern made several substitutions, some because of injuries, Sudbrook bombarded Abbey’s box.

Lund charged down a goalkeeper clearance into the empty net, then pinball in Tintern’s box found him free a yard out to complete a deserved hat-trick for 6-5.

That was on the stroke of 90, but referee Carl Arthur declared seven minutes of added time and a string of corners led to yet more penalty box pinball, and the ball fell to Little, who rifled it into the top corner on 96 minutes for 6-6 at full-time.

Sudbrook laid siege to Abbey’s goal for the first 15 of extra-time, but could not create an opening.

And with Tintern attacking up the hill in the second period, they were awarded a free-kick in the D of the penalty area, and Reynolds clipped a stunner into the top corner for 7-6 and his fourth to the delight of the players and home crowd.

The visitors could not force the penalty shootout, and delighted coach Jack Davies said: “We made hard work of it, but fair play the lads dug really deep and I feel we probably deserved the result.”

In the other semi, East Gwent Division 2 leaders Underwood won another thriller 5-4 at second-placed Chepstow Town 3rds.

Elsewhere, Rhys Williams blasted a hat-trick to help put high-flying Portskewett & Sudbrook in 11th heaven away to Undy Athletic 3rds in East Gwent Division One.

Scott Smith and Sam Wilkins also fired braces in an 11-1 thumping, with the other goals coming from Adam Cousins, Bradleigh Scawthorn, Jordan Poole and Tyler Flage.

But Chepstow outfit Thornwell R&W stay top by a point after a 3-0 home win over basement side Severn Tunnel, while Sudbrook CC stay third thanks to a 6-3 home win over Caldicot Town 3rds.

Monmouth’s Rockfield Rovers travelled to Caldicot Castle for a mid-table clash, but narrowly failed to storm the ramparts losing out 3-2.
