AT the recent Annual General Meeting of the Monmouth & District Angling Society, held at the Three Horseshoes Inn, Monmouth, Chairman Darren Davies took members and visitors alike through an agenda which covered both the highs and the lows of the club's 2014 activities
High spots included the excellence of the coarse fishing on the river Wye where members Rob Clarke and Tony Roberts recorded double figure Barbel on the Upper Wye beats at Hadnock and on the Lower Wye beats known locally as "The Duke's Water".
There was also good fishing to be found at the Treowen Estate near Dingestow on the club's three still waters. The Carp pool, newly stocked with fish of 2/3lbs, proved a great success with two long standing members recording Carp of over 12lbs on their first visit. Richard and John Wheelock, the owners of the estate, have stocked Carp in this pool for over 30 years so the presence of these big boys is no surprise.
The club is keen to promote fishing to newcomers and young people and will hold a number of "teaching days" in 2015 when those interested can come and try the sport for themselves. Memberships and day tickets are available from the Shire Hall information centre, alternatively contact the Honorary Secretary via the website http://www.monmouth">www.monmouth

2014 was to be the year the club improved the quality of the fishing on the River Monnow at Vauxhall Fields. Little progress was made this year but in 2015, with the direct help and guidance of Natural Resources Wales, improving the riparian habitat of this, Monmouth's own river, remains a target activity. Anyone interested in helping with this project should contact either a committee member or the club secretary.
