Monmouth Town left it late to secure a 1-0 league win over RTB Ebbw Vale at the weekend, with Taylor Street scoring the decisive goal in the 87th minute at the Monmouth Sports Ground.

The visitors were reduced to ten men early in the second half, and the Kingfishers eventually made the numerical advantage count. The victory was vital for their promotion push, keeping them second in the table with four games remaining and extending their unbeaten run to 11 matches.

The game began slowly, with chances limited for both sides. Monmouth’s first opportunity came when full-back Fin Thorp delivered a cross into the box, but no teammate was able to connect. Ebbw Vale soon created an opening of their own, working the ball to Luke James, whose initial shot was blocked before his follow-up cross was cleared by the home defence.

Goalless at half-time, both teams looked to step up their intensity after the break. However, just minutes into the second half, RTB’s James was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a challenge on Robbie Atkinson.

With the advantage, Monmouth pressed forward. Atkinson sent in a series of dangerous deliveries from the wing, though one cross flew just beyond Rob Laurie and another was safely gathered by goalkeeper Jaroslaw Franczyk.

The breakthrough finally came in the closing stages. Brad Phillips delivered a cross from the right which found Laurie; Franczyk saved the initial effort, but Street reacted quickest to tap home the winner.

After the match, coach Mark Morris emphasised the importance of the result: “The game wasn’t great from a spectator’s point of view, but the three points were vital. The wind was a real factor and made consistent play difficult. We’ve got four games left now and every game is a must‑win.”

Laurie added: “It always felt like it would take a scrappy goal, and fortunately we found a way to score.”
