Great saves and penalties in a sudden-death spot-kick shootout saw the Year 10 Monmouth Comprehensive School Squad win the Gwent FA School Cup competition.
The seven-a-side competition was held at Cwmbran Stadium with nine schools from across the Gwent region competing.
In the group stages, MCS finished runners-up after three wins and a loss in tightly contested games, beating Caerleon, St Alban’s and Lliswerry 1-0, and losing to tournament favourites Croesyceiliog by the same score.
Having the tougher semi-final draw, they had to play the winners of the other groups stage, Abersychan, in the semi-final.
But well-worked goals from Jayden Makondora and Kian Davies earnt MCS a deserved 2-1 win to play Croesyceiliog again in the final.
Having lost to them in the group stages, MCS went into the game as underdogs.
After a dogged defensive display from both teams, the game finished goalless and had to be decided with a penalty shootout.
With two great saves from goalkeeper Theo Bowen and well-taken penalties from Charley Handley, Archie Smith and George Gouldingay, Kian Davies slotted the winner to secure the Cup for MCS, 4-2 on penalties.
Year 10 now have the opportunity to do the cup double this year, with their Newport Cup final against Newport High scheduled to take place tomorrow (Thursday, May 12).
Squad: Kian Davies, Adam Hawkins, Jack Palmer, Charley Handley, George Gouldingay, Jayden Makondora, Archie Smith, Kieran Rees, Mathew Jones and Theo Bowen.
