Caldicot RFC 12 Monmouth Druids 14

MONMOUTH Druids travelled to Caldicot RFC in the knowledge that their opponents have had the benefit of recent results between the two sides, with some of these results coming about through scoring in the closing minutes of the matches.

In this match, despite previous results going against them and going behind early, the Druids lead at half time and were able to hold out at the end against a strong Caldicot comeback.

A difficulty for both teams in the latest clash was a gale force wind on a wet slippery pitch.

The Druids won the toss and elected to play into the wind for the first half, pinning their hopes of taking advantage of the elements in the second period when the Caldicot limbs could be weary.

The game started badly for the Druids when, from a line out in the visitors 22 metre area, Caldicot set up a rolling maul which resulted in them scoring the first try of the match. The score was not improved but this early score concentrated the thoughts of the Druids.

For the rest of the half, the Druids defended manfully and won the majority of possession. When Caldicot did win the ball, they were repulsed by a strong defence which was evident in the tackle area. The back row was prominent in this facet of play.

Just before half time the Druids took the lead following a fine break from centre Dewi Lane. He burst down the middle and when about to be tackled he fed number eight Dan Anstey who took on the move. Although held close to the posts, the ball was transferred to hooker Sean Oaten and he dived over the Caldicot try line. Full back Kris Gordon converted to give the Druids a 7-5 lead at the break.

The home side held the initiative in the second period mainly through their pack and spent most of the time in the Caldicot half of play. The Druids backs particularly with wings Matt Tabb and Kester Mobbs-Morgan tested the visitors defence with determined running.

Caldicot responded by the occasional burst but the momentum was with the home side. A defensive clearance kick by Caldicot was gathered by Kris Gordon who made ground and give a short pass to Sam Harding. He pinned his ears back and charged 20 yards to score near the posts. Gordon converted to move the Druids ahead 14-5.

As in previous games Caldicot finished the game strongly and they developed a rolling maul in the Druids 22 metre area. It rolled and rolled and eventually it rolled over the home try line near the corner flag. A fine conversion kick from the touchline into the strong wind made the score 14-12, but despite the tight scoreline the Druids held out for a well deserved victory.
