Former England World Cup rugby winner Mike Tindall is celebrating this week after his horse Monbeg Dude won the £90,000 Coral Welsh National at Chepstow under an ultra cool ride from Irish jockey Paul Carberry.
The eight-year-old, trained by Michael Scudamore, crossed the finish just half a length ahead of the Welsh trained 11-4 favourite Teaforthree who is stabled at the Pembrokeshire yard of Rebecca Curtis.
Carberry held up Monbeg Dude in the rear before making stealthy progress in the home straight. The 10-1 chance cruised into contention between the final two fences and took the lead at the last despite making a mistake.
The 50-1 chance Triggerman was third and Arbor Supreme, sent off at 33-1, finished fourth.
The winner, who cost just £12,000, is owned by Tindall, his Gloucester Rugby colleague James Simpson-Daniel and Wasps fly-half Nicky Robinson. The trainer Michael Scudamore also has a share.
The victory continued the Scudamore family's great tradition with the Coral Welsh National. Michael senior won on Creeola in 1957 and Peter Scudamore, father of the winning trainer, was successful in the race four times in the 1980s and 1990s.
The original fixture, on Thursday 27th December, was abandoned due to waterlogging. The meeting is one of the racing highlights at Chepstow and historically attracts large crowds. Saturday was no exception with a total crowd of just under 5,000.
New Executive Director of Chepstow Racecourse, Phil Bell, said: "We were delighted with the race for lots of reasons. We had an excellent crowd considering the last minute change of date, there was plenty of publicity about the participation of the Welsh trained Teaforthree and in the race itself we witnessed one of the best rides ever seen at the track.
"The racing industry must be congratulated for working together to ensure the race was re-scheduled following the abandonment on 27th December. The sponsor Coral, the Levy Board which helps fund the prize money, the British Horseracing Authority and Channel Four all combined to make the new date a success for all parties."
The date for the 2013 Coral Welsh National is Saturday 28th December.
