The Monmouth Rockets softball club has ended a brilliant season with 30-10 victory over the Base Invaders in their final game, which secured them a top three finish in the Bristol Softball Federation 2nd Division. The season's stand out performance was by Amit Aswani, who struck an incredible 19 homes runs in 18 matches, a strike rate surpassed by only one other player in the league. But the summer will be remembered more for the Rockets' amazing cup victory in the Bristol Wreck C grade tournament the weekend prior, where they won seven matches in a two-day softball marathon to secure top spot, beating Emmetts Heroes 18-6 in a hotly contested seven innings final. The Rockets have reached semi-finals and finals before but always seemed to fall at the last hurdle so their win was greeted with relief as much as joy this time. Rockets captain and first base Katie Schofield received the female MVP cup while Ieuan Gale, short-stop, received the male MVP cup. There was additional excitement when it became evident that the team's exploits in Bristol had not gone unnoticed by the softball community. Immediately after the Wreck tournament, Katie Schofield and Alys Thomas were invited to play for the GB development squad in the Softball World Series in September, which is a high level international co-ed tournament that attracts teams from as far away as New Zealand. This is an adult tournament so for two Year 11 girls to be invited to play is an enormous compliment and shows just how well the girls have been playing. Teammates Isabel Mosley and Mary Racz have also been invited to join Katie and Alys at the GB assessment weekend at Farnham Park Softball Centre in October, where they will fight for places to represent their country in the U16 and U19 European Championships in 2015. A tough winter training program still lies ahead but for now the Rockets players can take a well earned rest and reflect on their most successful summer yet.
