Monmouth Junior Netball Team won their first game of the season at the weekend, beating Ebbw Vale 9-7.

The team, although all under 14, play in the under 15s South East Wales Junior League based at Ebbw Vale leisure centre.

The team have found the league tough at times, playing against the best netballers in the region.

Ellie Johnson as centre and Cerys Hughes as WA swiftly fed the ball into shooters Emma Johnston and Eloise Brown.

But it was GA Lauren Hall who was on top form for this match – she repeatedly scored from all areas of the circle and gave Monmouth a lead of four goals by half time.

The games are only 10 minutes each way and after a quick half-time break they were back on court.

They quickly got stuck in and, led by captain Holly Ainge and winger Meggie Jarrold, repeatedly intercepted Ebbw Vale's centre passes.

Emma Johnston at GS calmed the team down with slow, controlled passes to Lauren Hall, who scored again and again.

The defence was solid throughout with GD Lydia Smith everywhere and defenders Mel Brooks and Sophie Pilot picking up on any loose balls.

The team worked hard, supporting each other throughout the game and deserved to win.
