Monmouth Town's Kingfishers brought their league campaign to a satisfactory close with a thoroughbred performance against six-times Welsh League champions Ton Pentre that had been sadly lacking over a fixture-filled April.
Town will more than likely finish a credible but ultimately disappointing 8th considering that a mere six weeks ago they topped the table and had the title within their sights.
But this 2-0 win was a barn stormer. A fairly even first half was punctuated with a few long shots and half chances until Rob Laurie smartly finished a flowing move on 39 minutes.
With Tom Maxted making his first appearance since October and 18-year-old Max Fessey making a rare appearance, Town travelled with just a returning Nick Harrhy on the bench but it mattered little in a rampant second half display.
Ton simply couldn't cope with the movement of Harrhy, MacDonald and the all round displays of Alderdice and Laurie.
Dean Palmer scored his first of the season from range and, although the floodgates then threatened to open, they merely jammed half way as the Town hit the post or bar on nine occasions, had a goal chalked off for offside and missed at least eight other clear opportunities – some in comedic fashion, making the ball boy busier than the goalkeeper.
Ton didn't exactly give up but lost all organisational shape and Town were happy to slalom around in the Rhondda sun failing to score a hatful.
Luckily this time the points were in the bag and Town could concentrate on winning their first Gwent Senior Cup since before the Second World War yesterday (Tuesday 7th May) against Caldicot Town at Goytre FC.
