Monmouth A 39–29
Chepstow
ON Monday 3rd November, Monmouth Ladies 1st team faced Chepstow in the South East Wales premier division.
Having lost three matches on the bounce, Monmouth were in need of a win to boost team morale.
Monmouth began with good pace and accurate passing between the centre court players Emma King and Kali-Jade Cross. A combination of well-timed feeds and good movement from both shooters, allowed Monmouth to convert from their possession.
Laura Griffiths began by putting excellent pressure on the Chepstow attack, making it difficult for them to maintain flow. By the end of the first quarter, Monmouth led by two goals.
Monmouth kept the pressure on throughout the second and third quarter but Chepstow continued to work tirelessly and their strong defence meant that the Monmouth shooters Nina Booker and Holly Hall had to work hard for their space.
At times it was very physical in the circle as both teams wanted the win. At the Monmouth defensive end, Mandy Davies picked up several excellent interceptions in the centre third. She was then able to take advantage of the quick turn over, catching the Chepstow defence off guard, with some long feeds directly into the shooters. After a quick half time change, Vanessa Ball put excellent pressure on the Chepstow goal attack which forced her to shoot from distance.
This then allowed Becky Hoggins who took the court at half time to use her height to pick up some excellent rebounds.
Monmouth were able to convert their turn overs, allowing them to extend their lead by six goals at the end of the third quarter.
Monmouth went in to the final quarter of the game with a well-deserved lead. All they had to do now was to score off every centre pass and keep possession of the ball.
The Chepstow defence, however, did not give up and Holly Hall was commended for her patience in the shooting circle and her ability to stand her ground.
The player of the match for Monmouth, voted for by Chepstow, was Holly Hall while the player's player for Monmouth was Laura
Griffiths.
Next week Monmouth will face Newbridge A.
