MONMOUTH CC under-9's began their 2015 season with a home defeat against an accomplished Colwall side.

But despite the 55 run defeat, team manager Liam Stubbs was very pleased with the performance.

Monmouth restricted their more experienced opponents to 345 on an excellent batting wicket prepared by groundsman Gordon Grey.

Skipper Jake Teague set the tone with two accurate overs, while William Tatham recorded the outstanding figures of 3-1-11-1.

More good news followed for the Tatham family when five year old debutant JP took his first wicket for the club.

Sam Brennan excelled in the field with Megan Maguire and Boris Hale both bowling well.

Boris then set the tone for the run chase, followed by a skilful 13 from William Wilton who was ably supported by sister Bella.

A partnership of 24 from the Tatham brothers gave Monmouth hope, but the team lost wickets regularly after that against some accurate Colwall bowling.

A late rally from Patrick Stubbs and Lauren Maguire proved not to be quite enough as the team finished on a score of 290.

Monmouth under-9s are away to Wormelow next weekend and anyone interested in playing junior cricket at Monmouth should contact [email protected]">[email protected] or head to the sports ground on Wednesday evenings for training between 5.30-6.30pm.
