Spirit of Monmouth Running Club delivered another lively and eventful week, filled with racing achievements, determined training, and the usual dose of club humour and camaraderie. From half‑marathon success in Cheltenham to tough sessions on home soil, the blue‑and‑yellow vests were out in force across Monmouthshire and beyond.

The highlight of the week was the Cheltenham Half Marathon, where three Spirit runners took on the Regency streets, twisting park paths and enthusiastic crowds of the town. The course, known for its mix of urban scenery and gentle undulations, provided a memorable challenge.

Matthew Visser produced an outstanding performance, finishing in 1:36:18. Fuelled by jelly babies and family encouragement, he collected multiple personal records along the way and crossed the line with enough speed to require several official time corrections from his support crew. Michael Visser also ran strongly, starting fast and holding on well to finish in 1:54, adding further personal achievements to his growing list. Helen Shepherd completed the trio, running a determined hometown race in 2:02:28 despite minimal sleep and a challenging morning. All three represented the club superbly and returned home with well‑earned medals.

Tuesday’s club session at Chippenham Fields was a demanding VO₂ Max workout led by coach Barry. Runners tackled repeated 3.5‑minute efforts at 5K pace with short recovery intervals. The session produced impressive performances across the board, with strong efforts from Tom Chinnick, Rachel Waters, Lee Davies, Liberty Barlow, Matthew Visser, Fay Visser and Renske Bouwens. Even those who mis‑remembered the session plan still managed to complete it with enthusiasm.

Thursday saw the return of the club’s autumn Trail & Treats series, though the “treats” remained elusive. Led by Nick Sloper, runners explored the woodland paths of Chepstow Park Wood. Fay Visser enjoyed views of the Severn Bridge, while others including Michael Visser, Renske Bouwens, Brian Evans, Barry, Sian Burns, Kirk and Susan Lincoln tackled the climbs with good humour.

Thursday’s training included Portmeirion coastal paths, local four‑mile loops and more hill work. On Friday, several runners took on challenging climbs, including a notable 15‑mile outing from Keith Penny and a strong Kymin run from Katie Adams. Saturday featured a mix of shorter efforts, hilly routes and, remarkably, a treadmill half marathon completed by Vicky Roberts. Sunday rounded off the week with long runs, scenic routes and the traditional Forest of Dean outings.

The club also marked the retirement of long‑standing member Steve Reason, who is moving to Norfolk after two decades with Spirit of Monmouth. Known for his humour, consistency and warnings about local cows, Steve leaves with the club’s warmest wishes and gratitude.
