A second half hat trick by the irrepressible Dan MacDonald stole the show as the Kingfishers eased to a comfortable victory against previously unbeaten former Welsh Premier Afan Lido. Some of the shine was taken off the victory by a red card for Chris Ham who has been tearing things up a bit of late and will now miss three games but on a superb late summers day at the seaside there was simply no stopping the Welsh League Champions. Town got off to a slow start giving the ball away and inviting some Lido attacks and a bit of erratic kicking by Blackburn encouraged the home side. But soon Town were in the groove creating chances at will and dominating play. Ham went close, Ford fired over, Harrhy drew a good save and from a series of corners Alderdice's head rose highest to put Monmouth 1 – 0 up. By half time it could have been three or four as Town simply tore Lido apart swarming all over the back four with some fine interplay from Ham, Harrhy and MacDonald as Ford joined in the fun and even Aaron Davies made overlaps that rolled back the years. For all the superb play it was just the one goal to show. Almost immediately MacDonald got his first since his return from Merthyr receiving a ball from Harrhy and calmly slotting home. On the hour mark he made it 3 – 0 getting first to the ball controlling it and again using his composure to finish superbly. Ham then got dismissed for violent conduct after a tussle with Lido's Lee Jones who also saw red. The dismissal unsettled Town more than the home team and it took a while to regroup but on 82 minutes a lovely lay off by substitute Josh Bull set MacDonald free again and his finish from 18 yards was sublime. There was still a little time for great solo effort from Eliot Evans which cannoned off the bar in the last action of the game. Manager Andrew Smith was delighted with his charges: "I said before the game that I think Macca is the best player at this level and well, what can you say. He gives us that little bit extra and makes others play. "Overall though I was pleased with the squad. We used 14 players today and everyone put a shift in. Some of our approach play was great to watch so I hope the lads enjoy the result today and can take into the next game." Town are back in action next Saturday at Aberdare before returning to Pen Y Pound on Friday 19th September to take on last year's runners up Taffs Well in a 7.30pm kick off, Town's first floodlit home game.
