A sunny day at the LCG greeted both teams as Llanarth looked to see what it takes to be Conference 2 Champions when they faced current title holders Crumlin. Skipper Heath won the toss and elected to bat, and the innings began slowly but assuredly against an accurate attack that was backed up by good fielding and field placings, nevertheless at 79-0 at the half-way stage Llanarth must have felt decently placed to press on and set something just over 200. Baxter (38) had opened his account with a nick through the slips but after that looked in his best form of the season in striking several pleasant boundaries, his feet, for a change, moving to where they were supposed to early on in an innings. However he was undone by a beauty from S Veall that pitched on off, seamed just enough to beat the bat and take the top of off. S Veall (2-11) continued to bowl beautifully and in conjunction with I Veall (3-47) they greatly reduced the Trees' hopes of a high total and the innings stumbled to 124-5 with just six overs to go. C Hopkins (3-35) then returned to bag Lomax for a hard fought 67 and Crumlin held all of the cards. Vaughan briefly entertained with some ball striking to get Llanarth up to the 150 mark before being run out. A total of 152-9 was below par and as the Trees ate a splendid tea they knew they would have to take every chance that they created in the Crumlin innings. Unfortunately Llanarth blew almost every chance that they created in what was a mini-story of the season so far. Whatever total that the Trees set they always knew that C Hopkins and S Veall had to be removed sharpish or the game would be over very quickly. Hopkins offered a very presentable chance in the third over but it was grassed and it wasn't until 50 had been raised that he was dismissed when superbly taken by Jimmy Davies off of James. A key moment then occured when Powell deceived S Veall early in his dig as he played across a straight one, the lbw shout was upheld by the non-striking batsman but unfortunately for the Trees he wasn't the one in the white coat. Shortly afterwards Llanarth only had themselves to blame as James found the edge of S Veall's bat but the offering was shelled. James (2-25) removed the other opener and when Powell struck for 76-3 a couple of quick wickets may have made it interesting but S Veall was now into his stride and while powering some fine strokes around the ground he also shepherded the strike very well restricting Llanarth's chances to get an end open. As Crumlin closed in on their target, and perhaps trying to finish the match rapidly, a further four chances, of varying difficulty, were presented and all were missed as the heads of the Trees dropped. Near the end Whistance managed to bag a fourth Crumlin wicket to earn an extra bonus point but the visitors closed the deal at 156-4.
