When overhead lightening and torrential rain caused an abrupt halt to the Peter Brunker Memorial Competition at the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club, none of the competitors imagined that after only an hour and a half's delay the course would have dried out sufficiently to resume.
The interruption didn't affect the concentration of Roger Lord, who stuck to his game plan to drive with topspin for distance, leaving shorter approach shots to the receptive greens. His net score of 73 was sufficient to take the trophy.
A number of the competitors failed to return to the course at the restart, preferring instead the dry conditions of the clubhouse.
Of those who braved the return to the very long playing course, credit must go to Eddy Pyatt, who finished in the top 10 despite a Bingo caller's legs 11 on the par-five 12th hole.
David Lyon returned to somewhere close to his best after a number of disappointing recent performances, with the leading gross score of 76. Luke James had a fit of pique due to perceived slow play and tore up his card to record a nil return.
Geoff Walsh picked up the Idiot of the Week trophy for signing for an incorrect score on the final hole, thereby disqualifying himself.
Walsh stood on the 18th tee leading the competition despite an earlier own goal, when he noticed his ball move when grounding his putter on the 12th green to concede a penalty shot.
Things got worse when his wayward tee shot down 18 forced him to play a provisional ball, which two tops later still hadn't reached the water in front of the green.
His first ball was eventually found balanced on reeds at the water's edge and a few swipes later struggled into the hole.
On realising his error, Walsh advised resident professional Simon Aston, who offered arithmetic lessons as well as the full range of golf lessons that he so ably provides.
