Monmouth's 12-match unbeaten run stretching back to 1st September was ended by a spirited Risca United, who fully deserved their win against a lacklustre Monmouth side.

Town, perhaps with one eye on next week's Welsh Cup third round tie again Premier Division Bala Town, failed to capitalise on several good opportunities with their normally reliant strike force misfiring and despite plenty of possession the Kingfishers found it hard to break down the Risca defensive lines.

Add in some questionable key decisions and it was a day to forget for the Town.

It started brightly enough with Harrhy continuing his good form on 14 minutes, finishing off a sweeping move after 16-year-old Zimbabwean Kuwana had hit the cross bar for the visitors.

Indeed, the little African was looking very lively and his strike partner Davies also kept the ball well.

Davies it was who went through in the 38th minute looking for the equaliser but his run was halted by Blackburn, who despite emerging with the ball was adjudged to have fouled the Cuckoos striker and conceded a hotly-disputed penalty, which was dispatched by Davies.

Just five minutes later Harrhy was glancing a fine header beyond the visiting keeper to put Town in the lead at half-time.

The second half followed much the same pattern with Town wasteful of plenty of possession and finding it difficult to break down the Risca defence.

Palmer hit the bar with a header and too often shooting chances were turned down, although the visiting keeper made some important blocks and catches.

With just two minutes remaining Davies went through again and his shot sliced under Blackburn to send the game into extra time.

Again Town went on the attack. Harrhy hit the bar from close range and MacDonald fired over on a number of occasions.

With 104 minutes on the clock Davies again found himself bearing down on Blackburn's goal and his shot was diverted up onto the bar but the diminutive Kuwana was on hand to head into an empty net.

The second period of extra time saw more incident as the Kingfishers tried to get the equaliser.

MacDonald again had shots blocked and fired one over when well placed, Ford fizzed crosses across the box and Alderdice was shown the red card for protesting too strongly after he was upended in the penalty area.

But the game and the day belonged to Risca, whose defensive work and ability to capitalise on openings was the difference on the day.

Town, sponsored by WyeMedia and the Raduni Restaurant, will be looking to put their disappointment behind them when they welcome Welsh Premier side Bala Town to the Sports Ground this Saturday (8th December) for a 1.30pm kick off.

The Lakesiders are currently fifth in the Welsh Premier Division and aiming for a Europa League spot but the Kingfishers are confident they are capable of causing an upset.

Manager Barry Burns said after Saturday's game: "Although Bala have a team with lots of football league experience (including former Hereford United and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Kenny Lunt) and a Welsh international in Mark Jones we've also got some good players who can cause them a few problems.

"If we have a good day with a big crowd behind us we can cause an upset that's for sure. We just have to take any chances that come our way and be really switched on."
