Monmouth Town's Kingfishers earned a comfortable victory against one of the better teams in the division with a super display against visiting AFC Porth last Saturday (23rd November).
Porth are one of the tipped teams and although every game has been a tight affair between these two teams this was a very good win as Porth, led by former Swansea City player Adrian Needs, had no answer to the flair and killer punches that Town possess in abundance.
Rob Laurie opened the scoring in the sixth minute, latching onto a flick from a corner to notch from close range before Nick Harrhy finished a sumptuous move by volleying home from six yards in the 16th.
From there on it was a case of whether the Town could keep their discipline and kill off the game.
This is a much more resilient Monmouth team, who are slowly showing they may be capable of competing for the Welsh League title and so it proved on the hour when a period of pressure by the visitors was comfortably dealt with as man-of-the-match Dean Lee decided to take matters in hand, driving at the defence and clipping over the advancing keeper to put the game out of reach.
Town manager Steve Jenkins, instead of celebrating, was busy berating his defence for not marking at a corner just 30 seconds previously, showing that even the best bits of Town do not excuse an occasional lapse.
The subsequent substitutions gave Jacob Guy and the Palmers, Sam and Dean, a chance to stretch their legs and its possible the changes unsettled the side to let Porth have a rare glimpse at goal and pull one back.
Alderdice soon restored the three-goal lead with a neat header low down from a corner.
The result from there on was never in doubt and Town, sponsored by WyeMedia and Raduni Restaurant, picked up all three points and moved to third in the Welsh League table.
Town are away tonight (Wednesday 27th November) at Cambrian and Clydach hoping to move up to second place before a trek to Llanidloes on Saturday (30th November) in the third round of the Welsh Cup, looking to book a place in the last 16.
The tie, originally drawn at home, has been moved because of a rugby fixture, which continues to show the reliance Monmouth Town have on goodwill and a paucity of facilities in the town to host anything approaching a decent level of sport, given the excellence of most of its sporting teams.
