A second half hat-trick by Elliot Ford and a brace for Eliot Evans formed the basis of this emphatic win against Third Division strugglers Treharris and sent Town through to a potential clash against Welsh Premier opposition in the third round.

This could and perhaps should have been a more difficult hurdle on a bumpy, small pitch that had also had the benefit of a week's worth of rain but once the game settled into any form of a pattern it was clear that Town's First Division players had more quality throughout.

In fairness, the home team could have adopted different tactics but chose to try to play what football anyone could but were second best throughout.

Town went in at half-time only one goal to the good courtesy of a thumping header by Rob Laurie, returning to the starting line up.

But for a stupendously bad decision not to award a penalty for a scything challenge on Elliot Ford when clean through, it would have been game over before the break.

It didn't take too long to create the necessary breathing space as Evans danced through the home defence and poked home to make it 2-0.

Just three minutes later Ford got his first with a calm volley as the keeper made a hash of a clearance and then Evans was rewarded for some good work by coaxing an own goal out of a harassed defender.

That was that and at times the Kingfishers' forward play was a joy to watch, with MacDonald at the heart of everything and Harrhy also showing some deft touches and great movement.

Although Treharris pulled one back, Ford was not to be denied his hat-trick and two more strikes earned him the match ball before Evans popped up again for his second.

Town, sponsored by WyeMedia and Raduni Restaurant, were looking forward to the draw made last Monday and hoping they can do better than last year's spirited defeat against eventual Europa League entrants Bala Town.

This Saturday, however, Town are back in home action in a Welsh League Division One clash against Tata Steel (Sports Ground, 2pm) who are at the wrong end of the table as the Kingfishers look to take advantage of leaders Haverfordwest's day off by closing the gap at the top of the table.

• In the Welsh League Youth Division, goals by Cameron Coulson and Jack Buckley were enough to clinch a second win of the season for the Kingfisher's youth, with Monmouth running out 2-1 winners against Caldicot Town.
