CHEPSTOW Cricket Club's 1st XI enjoyed a Macey Cup victory over the weekend, beating Monmouth Cricket Club's 1st XI at Mathern Road.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat first, with openers Adam Roberts (60) and Josh Grey (44) giving the away side a great start, putting on 113 for the first wicket.

That fell when Alyn Franklin took a smart catch to dismiss Grey for 44 off the bowling of Jon Roberts (1-21).

Tudor Morgan-Huggett (1-17) bowled the other opener but Matthew Jones (21 not out) helped Monmouth to set Chepstow the task of overhauling a total of 149-3.

In reply, Chepstow lost Carwyn James for 13 and fellow opener Gareth Ansell for five, both removed by Rajesh Kuttappu, but a fine innings by Tyler Morgan-Huggett, who hit six boundaries and two maximums in his 62, settled the home side.

David Bennett added 34 and a useful 19 runs from Dave Monk saw them to 150-5.

"Alyn Franklin's good catch at cover to dismiss the dangerous Josh Grey was the turning point," claimed Chepstow all-rounder Malith Madurasinghe.

"Tight bowling meant only 30-odd runs were scored after Grey was out and we were happy with their total considering the start they got.

"We got off to a poor start, but Tyler continued his good form with the bat and a 76-run partnership for the third wicket with Dave Bennett steadied the ship.

"It was another good all-round performance. We didn't panic when they got off to a good start or when we lost early wickets. We showed good character and look forward to the next round."

Although Chepstow 1st XI's match at Pontypridd was cancelled due to the weather, the 2nd XI persevered to beat Pontypridd's 2nd XI at Mathern Road.

After Pontypridd won the toss and decided to bat first, Chepstow restricted them to 168-5 with Gareth Own (62) and Gareth Palmer (45) rallying their side after early losses saw them at 46-3.

Luca Goddard (1-19) recorded the best bowling figures for the home side.

Chepstow also lost early wickets cheaply but Tuhin Gavand (25), James Bostock (27) and Ben Tindall (26) put them in the driving seat before Jonathan Huws (34 not out) and Josh Tregaskes (19 not out) saw them to their target.

"Pontypridd made an above-par score on a green wicket," Chepstow skipper Huw Rogers said.

"We were in trouble at 90-5 but Jon and Josh batted excellently to take us home in the last over."
